Summary

  • Role: B.Sc. Student
  • Duration: 4 Months
  • Start: May 2024

This project was developed as part of my B.Sc. thesis within the Green Twin project. The goal was to design and build a smart locker prototype that supports a shared economy, especially in remote or rural areas. The idea is that people can share items they don’t use every day, for example by placing a drill in a locker and renting it out to neighbors. The project combined both hardware and software development. The locker system was controlled by a Raspberry Pi and included a 12 V electronic lock, a barcode scanner, relays for lock control, and additional electrical components. On the software side, I developed a small Python GUI using Tkinter that allows users to view available lockers and rent one. After renting, the user receives an email containing a barcode. This barcode can be scanned at the locker, which then unlocks automatically. The communication between Software (Server) and Locker (Client) was done with the help of Websockets. I really enjoyed working on this project because it allowed me to combine hardware and software in an IoT setup, where results are immediately visible. Through this work, I gained a lot of hands-on experience in electronics and embedded systems, and it definitely sparked a deeper interest in this area.
